Black History Essay Contest

Seventh Annual Black History Essay Contest
OFFICIAL RULES AND GUIDELINES 
  
Middle School / Grades 6-8 & High School / Grades 9-12 
  
Cynthia Graham Hurd/St. Andrew’s TeenSpot Black History Essay Contest is open to all grades 6-12 students in the Charleston Area.  One winner will be chosen from each level (middle school and high school) and will be awarded a prize package equaling the amount of $50.00. Entries have to be in by February 28, 2017. The winner will be notified on March 13, 2017. 
  
  
  • Essays must be brought in or postmarked by February 28, 2017. The address is Hurd/St. Andrews Regional Library c/o Patrice Smith, 1735 North Woodmere Drive, Charleston, SC 29407. Also they can email to smithp@charleston.lib.sc.us with the subject line “Black History” Essay.  
  • Each student may only enter one essay. 
  • Essays should be no longer than 500 words in length, and should be typed or hand written in print only. Must by legible. No cursive writing will be accepted.  
  • Essays submitted must include the contestant’s name, email address, telephone number, school the student attends, grade level and the title of the essay.  
  • Each essay must reflect the contestant's own research, writing and original thinking.

GED Basics at STA
Saturday, May 21 at 2:00 p.m.
To promote community access to knowledge about the GED, Vanetia Fahie of La_Femme will be hosting a GED information session at Hurd/ St. Andrews Library. This session is designed to present essential details about the GED test and a Q/A segment devoted to addressing attendees’ questions.




Young Ladies Shine Time
Saturday, May 28 at 1:00 p.m.
Young ladies in grades 5-12 are invited to come out and celebrate their uniqueness and purpose while being encouraged, enlightened and empowered.  Self- worth, peer pressure, and health concerns are a few of the topics that will be addressed and discussed.

Teens complete a ballot voting for their favorites of the last year in movies, TV, books, etc. Teens can vote once a day and receive a treat. Votes will be tallied at the end of the month. Winners will be announced on October 5.

Throughout August
Teens invent a holiday for the month of August. Place your entries in the Invent a Holiday display. Each week a holiday will be picked and the inventor wins a prize.







TeenSpot Back To School Crossword Puzzle 
Friday, August 1 – Wednesday, August 13
Take a moment to find all the words in the crossword puzzle, and be entered into a drawing for a free gift basket of school supplies.

Monday, August 5 at 5 p.m.
Frankenstein's creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.
